This tool offers general guidance based on AKC breed weight ranges and is not a diagnosis. Healthy weight varies with age, build, neuter status and activity. For an accurate body condition score, see your veterinarian.
How to tell if your dog is overweight
Vets use a 1-to-9 Body Condition Score (BCS). A dog at an ideal 4-5/9 has ribs you can feel without pressing, a visible waist from above, and a tucked-up belly from the side. Carrying just 10-20% over ideal counts as overweight; more than 20% is obese, and it shortens lifespan measurably.
Why breed weight ranges matter
A "good weight" for a Chihuahua and a Rottweiler are worlds apart, so this checker compares your dog to its own breed's AKC standard rather than a generic number. Within a breed, the range accounts for frame and sex.
What extra weight does
Every extra pound multiplies load on the joints, which is why overweight dogs develop arthritis and cruciate injuries earlier. It also strains the heart and raises inflammation. Trimming back to ideal weight is one of the most powerful, free things you can do for a longer, more comfortable life. The joint health guide covers the support side.
Common questions
How do I weigh my dog at home?
Step on a scale holding your dog, then weigh yourself alone, and subtract. For small dogs, a kitchen or baby scale works directly.
My dog is above the range but looks fine, is that ok?
Breed ranges are a guide. Large or heavily-muscled individuals can sit slightly above and still be lean. The real test is the rib-and-waist check, and your vet's body condition score.
How fast should a dog lose weight?
Safely, about 1-2% of body weight per week, through measured portions and steady activity. Crash diets are dangerous for dogs. Your vet can set a target.
Is this an official AKC tool?
No. We reference publicly listed AKC breed weight ranges to compare your dog, and link to the AKC breed page for each result. It is educational guidance, not a diagnosis.
