Weight ranges reflect publicly listed AKC breed standards and describe typical adults, individuals vary with frame, sex and neuter status. Health areas are areas a breed is statistically prone to, not a diagnosis. Always confirm with your veterinarian.
How much should a dog weigh?
There's no single answer, healthy weight is breed-specific. A Chihuahua tops out around 6 lb while a Mastiff can pass 200 lb, and both are perfectly healthy. That's why this chart pulls each breed's own AKC weight range rather than a one-size number, so you can see where a full-grown dog of that breed should land.
Toy, small, medium, large and giant
Breeds are grouped by adult weight: toy (under ~12 lb), small (12-22 lb), medium (22-57 lb), large (57-99 lb) and giant (100 lb+). Size class drives almost everything practical, how fast they finish growing, daily calories, joint load and even average lifespan, with smaller breeds generally living longer.
Weight, breed and a longer life
Whatever the breed, staying lean is one of the biggest levers for healthy years, overweight dogs develop arthritis and disease earlier. If you have a puppy still growing into its adult size, the Puppy Weight Calculator checks whether it's on track, and the Dog Weight Checker tells you if an adult is at a healthy weight.
Common questions
How do I know my dog's adult weight?
Pick the breed above to see its AKC weight range. Purebred dogs usually finish within that band; mixed breeds tend to land between their parent breeds, often closer to the larger parent.
At what age is a dog fully grown?
Small breeds finish around 9-12 months, medium breeds around 12-15 months, and large or giant breeds keep filling out until 18-24 months. Until then, use the Puppy Weight Calculator.
My dog is bigger or smaller than the range, is that a problem?
Breed ranges describe typical adults. Sitting a little outside can be normal frame variation, but a large gap may mean a mixed background or a weight issue worth a vet check.
Is this an official AKC tool?
No. We reference publicly listed AKC breed weight ranges and link to the AKC page for each breed. It is educational guidance, not a diagnosis.
